Volunteer Profile: Company Program Advisors

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia is looking for volunteers to act as advisors for the Company Program, beginning across the province this October. This program creates an environment for working professionals to coach students to run their own business and experience the excitement and future career potential in entrepreneurship. It is designed to encourage them to recognize the value of responsible business practices, and increase their awareness of the skills and resources required to operate a business.

QUALIFICATIONS

As an advisor, the overall responsibility is for the weekly meetings and the students who attend.

The following skills, qualifications and experience are ideal:

  • Experience and interest in management, finance, marketing, production, or HR
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to the Company Program
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Basic knowledge of the Canadian Business System
  • High level of comfort working, interacting and motivating high school students
  • Ability to work as team player
  • Ability to give positive yet constructive feedback
  • Ability to treat students as equals
  • Ability to be flexible

Advisors will have the opportunity to create, develop and use several different management styles as the year progresses.  There is a great opportunity to experiment with many approaches to motivate and inspire students.  As they help others to strive to do their best, advisors will experience personal growth and a sense of accomplishment.

COMMITMENT

The volunteer Company Program advisor position requires a time commitment of approximately 110 hours from September to April. This time includes training sessions, weekly meetings with other advisors and students, communicating with the JA office, workshops and special events throughout the year. Advisors are expected to attend a minimum of 80-100% of weekly meetings as well as all training sessions. Special events require at least 1 advisor per team to be present.

New advisors will need to undergo a criminal record and vulnerable sector check. Returning advisors will be expected to update these checks at least once every 2 years that they volunteer with Junior Achievement. This can be arranged through Junior Achievement, and may be offered either free of charge, or at a discount, depending on the volunteer’s location. Get in touch to find out more!
